In the Chamber
Posted Tuesday, 12 June 2007 at 11:35

Most of yesterday was spent in and out of the Chamber - I wanted to hear William Hague deliver his speech in the debate calling for an Inquiry into the war in Iraq, but even more I wanted to hear Margaret Beckett's response. I had heard William on the Today programme, and guessed that his speech would be an elongated and detailed version of the morning interview.

William never fails to impress.

In his droll unemphasised way, he pointed out that the Select Committee report into the Iraq war had failed to take evidence from Alistair Campbell; Tony Blair; the head of GCHQ; the Cabinet Office intelligence coordinator; the Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee; the Chief of Defence Intelligence; and the Head of the Secret Intelligence Service – all of whom are top secret and nameless of course!

So, the report the government holds up as 'independent' and uses as an excuse not to have a full Inquiry into all aspects of the war - and not just why we went in the first place - didn’t take evidence from anyone who knew anything about what happened.

That figures.

I was complimented by no less than eight MPs and two government ministers yesterday. I preened my way through the afternoon under a barrage of praise with a smile all over my face.

The compliments ranged from, “love the hair", "very cute” to “gorgeous hair sweetie”. Did this surprise me? Well actually it did, but it didn’t stop me lapping it up!

Anne Main - MP for St Albans - brought me down to earth with a thud. After hearing the fourth or so compliment she exclaimed “You had it cut six weeks ago, what’s wrong with them?”

Well…… they are male MPs, will that do?

We deserve an Inquiry.

Nadine Didn't you remark on another MP having an old photo on their web page?. Shortly after you changed you hairstyle but kept with the old photo. At the time I thought you might have reverted, but it now seems not. COme on then - a new image of your new image please.

Are you certain these male MPs were not holding up their vanity mirrors and reflecting on their own appearance due to the lack of public appreciation?

Only 10 Nadine? Were you having a bad hair day? Is there a shortage of opticians? Have they switched off the lights in Westminster? I must say I've always thought MPs were blind to the truth, and this confirms it....You obviously weren't wearing your halo!

I hope the Conservatives never give up on pressurising this government on Iraq. It is bad enough that it takes 150 days (a year) to satisfy Gordon's lust for our hard earnt money, but that figure now becomes obscene for being the number of our brave service personnel killed in Iraq. Gordon claims Iraq has reached a turning point. I claim it reaches that ever day. Every point on a circle is a turn and that country continues to spiral in a downward direction.

Relax Nadine. These guys have probably seen young Dave's Shadow Cabinet reshuffle list and you're up for a top job so they're just creeping around you. They were acting the same around Pat Hewitt and Marg Beckett before their appointments!

More like they've seen Nadine's Blog appraisal of nanny Pat Hewitt and are creeping to prevent same happening to themselves.Didn't think Goddesses wore halos, in fact from the picture I've seen of Venus, it does look as if she wore much at all!

Jane K -one for you...you are obviously a highly intelligent and sensible lady having tuned into the best lady blogger's site. Whilst Nadine is a very, very special lady (mainly for putting up with us males)most of the ladies I know are wonderful! and reading about the compliments Nadine received in Westminster, I would say I'm starting to feel a pang of jealousy!

As Venus was the Goddess of love she obviously wouldn't be wearing a lot Ian. What would you wear!

Does anyone know if Carolone Flint blogs? She's no Goddess but might qualify as an angel. Some women can be so hurtful. We are sensitive creatures Nadine!

Nadine, you've made a rod for your own back with the standard you have set yourself on your blog. Others can afford a to lose interest in blogging---you can't. At least you're already an MP. Iain Dale is more use to the tory party as a blogger than he would be in the HoC. He couldn't update it 5 times a day as an MP. You can be too good at something for your own good.

Realized it was joke on blog . Not sure how to take piece on 3CR. Only heard part of it but sounded as if you resented our words of compliment. I would class them as words of endearment rather than romance. But if they offend you I can only apologise and will refrain from such utterings in future. You're still a goddess in my book though

Reading your comment in reply to John, regarding the 'marriage proposal' my heart literally leapt for joy. At last, I thought Nadine has found her ideal man, her soul mate, and he has proposed and Nadine is telling the world. Well, at least the ten 3CR listeners. No more carrying her burden alone, someone to share her world, her space. Someone to hug, to be happy with. Then I replayed the 3CR show online and I realised you were only talking about that wally from the other day. Par for the course for me, jumping to the wrong conclusion!

At the moment the key questions on Iraq are (1) what will help our troops (2) what will help the people of Iraq. The time for an inquiry into the causes should only come when the troops are back. It may also be that only when Bush is gone will Blair be able to speak freely to an enquiry.Calling for an enquiry while so many people involved are unable to speak freely is just party politics.
