Ordinary...A definition...Born Yesterday
Posted Monday, 23 April 2007 at 23:13

Tightly-folded bud,
I have wished you something
None of the others would:
Not the usual stuff
About being beautiful,
Or running off a spring
Of innocence and love -
They will all wish you that,
And should it prove possible,
Well, you're a lucky girl.

But if it shouldn't, then
May you be ordinary;
Have, like other women,
An average of talents:
Not ugly, not good-looking,
Nothing uncustomary
To pull you off your balance,
That, unworkable itself,
Stops all the rest from working.
In fact, may you be dull -
If that is what a skilled,
Vigilant, flexible,
Unemphasised, enthralled
Catching of happiness is called.         Philip Larkin

You realise Nadine that I am going to take every opportunity to mention the great things that happened a certain time ago and culminating in a certain celebration of a birth, not yesterday!!! so you can see it was a great year and certainly with the passage of time not one to celebrate with your head in a black hole. I shall keep the daily reminders comming until you surrender and say your looking forward to it. Premium Bonds- good old ERNIE.... 50 forward and we are on ERNIE No.4 Good omen put your money in for June's Draw as they are making more millionaires to celebrate 50 years. Surrender yet?

Nadine - please don't ever hanker to be being ordinary - just carry on being you

Hmm.. not quite as good as 'They fuck you up, your mum and dad, they don't mean to, but they do..etc. - but old Larkin beats the pants off most contemporary poets.
